Our Concept

Informal Definition: to begin to understand something : to catch on : to become fond of : to begin to like

The verb or phrase comes from the linen industry. For us it’s use creates a homonym. Cotton as a natural, renewable resource has deep roots in African history and it is the heart of most traditional fabrics. However the literal meaning of the phrase “to begin to understand”, is key to the essence of what this event label is intended to promote. We promote the growth, the realization and the embrace of Africanism happening right before our eyes in mainstream media and other environments around the world.

Our Cause

The Notkasse Afrikastudien is a fund for the support of students from the African continent. Providing support and opportunities for African international students aligns with our values of inclusivity and social responsibility. It demonstrates a commitment to providing equal educational opportunities and ensuring that talented individuals from various regions have access to quality education.

The Fachgruppe (FG) African Studies is the official body of all students in Master’s Degree in African Studies within the Center for African Studies Basel (ZASB). The primary mission of this FG is to ensure that student voices are heard, and their concerns are addressed during their time at the University of Basel.

The Centre for African Studies Basel ZASB coordinates Africa-related teaching and research at the University of Basel and its partner institutions. It is an acknowledged centre for interdisciplinary Africa-focused research and offers a Master’s and a PhD in African Studies as well as a continuing education programme for professionals.
